Thembi Mthembu

South Africa

Thembi is an artist who was born in eNseleni, South Africa, and now lives and works in Durban. She is studying towards a Master of Applied Arts in Photography at the Durban University of Technology. Although trained as a photographer, Thembi also explores various artistic mediums such as paint, woodcut/printmaking, and digital art. Her work looks at the notions and sociopolitics surrounding the body and she often uses her own body as a site for artistic exploration of these themes. She’s also fascinated by the narratives of her environments, consciousness, and cultural practices as a Black and African woman.

Thembi has participated in a number of notable local and international group exhibitions including Inkaba, with the Amasosha Art Movement at the Durban Art Gallery in 2022, Reshape 22 by Latitudes Online, and Pride and Loss, a collaborative exhibition curated by Professor Zanele Muholi at the Jenkins Johnson Gallery in Brooklyn, New York in 2018.
